Real empathy is building a mental model
of someone else’s reality
not yours dressed up in their shoes.
It’s not assuming. It’s asking.
It’s saying “I could be wrong” and meaning it.
You can feel everything and still miss the point.
You can look detached
and actually get it better than anyone else.
Empathy isn’t about being nice.
It’s about being accurate.
And it’s a skill, not a personality trait.
You can train it.
You can get it wrong.
You can get better.
If you’re overwhelmed, you might not have the bandwidth
to build someone else’s world in your head.
The most loving thing you can say sometimes is:
I don’t think I can see you clearly right now. But I want to.
